RCA-01

Context & Research Focus

Future mobility is shaped by two key shifts: sustainability and more flexible interior use enabled by autonomous driving.
In response, this project explores bio-materials and adaptive interior concepts to expand design possibilities beyond conventional automotive approaches.

The research is structured around three core themes:

  • Next-generation sustainability
  • Flexible use of space
  • Emotional quality

Material & Concept Exploration

  • Calcium-based bio-materials developed from seashells
  • Natural dye color palette exploration
  • Origami-inspired surface studies supporting interior flexibility

Sample Development

The research ideas were translated into physical samples using ceramic 3D printing.

  • Seashell-based paste formulation
  • Three-dimensional textures, patterns, and color expression
  • Iterative experimentation to study material behavior

Moodboards

Three moodboards were developed to combine:

  • Natural dye color palettes
  • Origami-inspired surface concepts
  • Draft interior scenarios exploring flexibility and emotional expression

Key Insights

  • Bio-materials show potential for next-generation sustainable concepts
  • Surface structures and colors enhance material expression
  • Origami-inspired three-dimensional patterns can support interior flexibility
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration offers valuable perspectives
